The 5th annual Women in Communications & Marketing awards.  For 2021 we are expanding the awards program to include both Canada and the United States.

Below are the Marketing award categories for both Agency and Brand side professionals:


Agency Founder - Business Growth [Founder/ Co-Founder]

This award is eligible to the original agency founder (and currently running the agency) who has delivered significant business growth.

Evaluation criteria is based on points earned for the following actions:

  • Total AORs (Agency of Record) wins between January 2020 - April 2021
  • Total AOR's Name that have renewed between January 2020 - April 2021
  • Total Project Wins (completed One-Off projects [NOT their AOR])

Agency Founder - Revenue Growth [Founder/ Co-Founder]

This award is eligible to the original agency founder (and currently running the agency) who has delivered year over year revenue growth for the agency.

Evaluation criteria is based on points issued based on the following:

Revenue growth over 2019-2020.

[(2020 revenue - 2019 revenue) / 2019 revenue] x 100 = total growth percentage

For example, if 2019 revenue was $20 million and 2020 revenue was $8 million

  • $20 million - $8 million = $12 million
  • $12 million / $8 million = 1.5
  • 1.5 x 100 = 150

Growth rate is 150% (percent)

We define gross annual revenue per generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Sales that cannot be booked as revenue under GAAP do not count for the purposes of the Women in Communications & Marketing awards. Gross revenue must be reported net of returns and discounts.

Agency Leader [Management] - Business Growth

This award is eligible to the current Managing Director/ President [non-founder] who has delivered significant business growth.

Evaluation criteria is based on points earned for the following actions:

  • Total AORs (Agency of Record) wins between January 2020 - April 2021
  • Total AOR's Name that have renewed between January 2020 - April 2021
  • Total Project Wins (completed One-Off projects [NOT their AOR])

Agency Leader [Management]  - Revenue Growth

This award is eligible to the current Managing Director/ President [non-founder] who has delivered year over year revenue growth for the agency.

Evaluation criteria is based on points issued based on the following:

Vice president

The Vice President of an agency is usually the second in command at the agency and supports the President by overseeing internal operations and stepping in when the President is unavailable. The Vice President has a top-level leadership role in a company and oversees department managers.

director

The director is responsible for overseeing all advertising and marketing products produced by the agency.  Directors ensure the agency produces high-quality  content for its clients and oversee the entire creative team, including copywriters, art directors, and designers.


manager (5 - 10 years)

Oversees account management team while dealing directly with clients. In addition to serving as the liaison between the client and the agency, providing guidance and mentorship to the team.


Creative Director

Creative directors lead the creative efforts at advertising agencies and marketing companies. They work with all the other creative roles in the agency including artists, designers, copywriters, marketers, and sales teams.

 Project Manager

Project managers oversee the coordination of teams and individuals to create, develop, and deliver ads and campaign. They’re responsible for quality control, budget, and scheduling.

All the planning, monitoring, and execution in a project typically falls under the domain of the project manager.

Account management/ campaign management (2 - 5 years)

Account managers are the client advocate within the agency. In addition to serving as the liaison between the client and the agency, account managers also offer the client strategic guidance. In order to do their job well, account managers need to be natural problem solvers, analytically minded, and proficient communicators. 

Financial marketer Professional of the Year

Led outreach to investors and analysts during a challenging or notable period for an organization, and succeeded in having the core message resonate with stakeholders and the media. May also have advised on or led marketing during a strategic shift for an organization. 

Government marketer of the Year

Led successful marketing efforts for a local, provincial or federal agency or department. Marketing challenges for the agency or department should be stated clearly, as well as evidence of success.

content marketer

On a day-to-day basis, content marketers build and manage an editorial calendar that delivers content aligned with the company’s objectives and business goals. They ensure that all content is on-brand — in terms of style, quality, and tone — and they optimize the content for search engines and social promotion. The content marketing manager is also responsible for tracking the performance.

Brand Manager

A brand marketer’s job is to ensure that the company and its products are associated with the right message. 

SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER

Social media is a huge marketing tool. Social media managers strategize the best ways to use social media for marketing.

You are in charge of various platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, as well as responding to comments and tweets, and creating and queuing up content calendars.

Your role is overseeing both a variety of people and a variety of advertising and sales campaigns as a marketing manager. You might be focused on just one product, an entire brand, or overseeing the entire marketing strategy for the company.

Whatever you are working on, it’s your job to help sell your product or message, and help those in positions that support you do the same.

Director of marketing

A Marketing Director oversees a company's marketing strategy, including policies, goals and initiatives. This position is tasked with conducting marketing research and developing marketing plans for specific products or services in a company.

Vice President of marketing

Vice President (VP) of Marketing is a marketing expert who takes responsibility for overall marketing results of a company. Vice President (VP) of Marketing oversees marketing strategies and efforts in order to strengthen company's market position and achieve desired business goals.

Chief marketing officer

Chief Marketing Officer (CMO's) are generally responsible for planning, developing, implementing and monitoring the overall business marketing strategy. Some of the duties may include market research, pricing, product marketing, marketing communications, advertising and public relations.

What are the Women In Communications & Marketing awards?

Our program helps promote, recognize and celebrate women’s achievements in leadership roles who are making a difference in the communications and marketing sector across Canada and the United States. 

Who are past winners?

The awards have been held 20172018 and 2019. Now for 2021 we are hosting the awards on The Connected One and extending nominations to include women working in communications, marketing and technology across both Canada and the United States.

Who should apply?

Women working in communications, marketing or technology roles with Canada and the United States.

What is the evaluation criteria?

1. Leadership and personal style (max. 500 words) – 20%

This award celebrates an individual who is a recognized icon in the marketing or public relations ecosystem. Describe this person’s personal achievements and leadership style and how that delivers success in multiple settings. What 3 words do people frequently use to describe them?

2. Business success (max. 500 words) – 50%

Briefly describe the person’s career history and the achievements of the companies and organizations they have led, particularly in the last 3-5 years. How does the person contribute to business success? What are the common themes and what links their business successes to their personal leadership style. Show the trajectory of success and how each contribution built on what came before.

3. Community impact and ecosystem contribution (max. 500 words) – 30%

Beyond their contributions to the businesses they led, what other roles has this individual had in the community that benefited the ecosystem as a whole? What organizations have they founded, grown or transformed? How do they give back and pay it forward? How does their contribution inspire and encourage others to do more, individually and together?

What is the breakdown for the awards?

Depending on entries, winners will be broken down by the following:

  • Geographic Region (Canada, United States)
  • Company Size (number of employees)
  • Age of Agency (0 – 5; 5 – 10; 10 – 20; 20+ years)
